Finding a Scrabble Club on Social Media
Some of the best places to find fellow Scrabble enthusiasts are on the social media sites you’re already using. Most clubs and players do their best to make groups known to others. The sites below are among the most active.
When it comes to finding people that live near you who share your interests, Facebook should be your first stop. You aren’t guaranteed to find a nearby group on Facebook. However, searching the various Scrabble groups can help you find relevant information and make connections. Those new connections could help point you in the right direction.
One good example is the Facebook page for WESPA, the World English-Language Scrabble Players Association. There’s also the option to create a post to ask your friends if they know any local Scrabble clubs. You might be surprised to find out that you’ve been friends with fellow Scrabble players this whole time.
Twitter might not lead you to as many close-by players as Facebook, but it’s another great place to start. There are plenty of individual and group accounts you can find and follow. You’ll find the North American Scrabble Players Association tweeting at @NASPA, for example.
Use these to develop connections with well-informed Scrabble players. The more you interact with users on Twitter, the greater your chances are of meeting someone who can help you find a local Scrabble club.
Reddit, or as it likes to call itself, “the front page of the internet,” is like a mix of Facebook and Twitter. You can use it to easily connect with people from all over the world, just like Twitter. But, you can also be selective and see only content from specific people and groups, like with Facebook.
The best thing about Reddit users is that they are often very passionate about the topics they discuss. Searching for terms like “Scrabble group” can reveal pages where people have asked similar questions. If you can’t find what you want from those, join Scrabble-related subreddits (topic-specific groups on Reddit) and ask questions that are more specific to what you need.
Official Scrabble Organizations
Another valuable option for finding nearby Scrabble clubs is to visit and explore the websites for official Scrabble organizations. These associations bring essential uniformity to the clubs. They provide support, standardized rules for play and conduct, and, most importantly for your purposes, lists of recognized Scrabble clubs.
NASPA
If you live in North America, you’ll want to visit the site for the North American Scrabble Players Association (NASPA). They are a group dedicated to serving the competitive Scrabble scene in North America. No other organization is as informed on competitive Scrabble play as they are. In fact, NASPA is licensed by Hasbro to administer official Scrabble play.
NASPA does have accounts on Facebook and Twitter, but their main page is filled with information on how to play Scrabble on a competitive level. To make things even better, they also have a club roster that catalogs every NASPA-affiliated group in the U.S. and Canada. Enter a Scrabble tournament near you!
ABSP
The Association of British Scrabble Players (ABSP) is a perfect site to explore if you are in the United Kingdom and on the hunt for a local club. Like NASPA, the ABSP helps guide and standardize tournament Scrabble play in their territory. Players, both new and veteran, can find resources to help them grow their community of players.
The ABSP website offers a full list of recognized clubs in the United Kingdom. It also provides links to other websites and Facebook groups operated by these clubs. Whether you’re from England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, ABSP can help you find what you need.
CASPA and NZASP
Scrabble players living in the Oceania region should check out the Council of the Australian Scrabble Players Associations (CASPA) and the New Zealand Association of Scrabble Players (NZASP). Both groups oversee and connect Scrabble clubs in their corner of the globe.
Each site offers plenty of useful information about how Scrabble tournaments and rules are managed in their respective regions. But, most importantly, they provide lists for each country’s local Scrabble clubs.
Enjoy Your Time with Fellow Scrabble Lovers
Now that you have an understanding of how to join your local Scrabble scene, you’re well on your way to having fun and making new friends. If you’re also eager to find Scrabble players online, then learn all that you can about the Internet Scrabble Club. Or you can take the initiative and create a Scrabble club of your own. Whatever you choose to do, there's always a game waiting for you.
